The History of Newtown

Our Newtown history is something we breathe, not just read about in our library texts.  From the moment you enter this celebrated borough you see the marks of the past upon the doorways, stone walls and hitching posts that have stood for hundreds of years.

This is a place of history that goes back to the very core of The Revolution — streets once filled with blacksmiths, wheelwrights, harness makers and millers, weavers, printers, innkeepers, shoemakers and farmers.  It is a town that has always offered the frontiers of modern life at every corner.  Is it possible for a town to be about many things?  In Newtown we know it is.

We trace our trail to the original Native inhabitants and their land deal with William Penn in 1682.  At times Newtown has been about Pennsylvania government.  A place where George Washington once headquartered.  A location which made its mark as an industrialist hub with meetinghouses, inns and cobblestone streets of commerce.  Newtown boasts the first operational theater in America and a hardware house that has opened its doors for business every day since 1869.  You can visit both while you’re here.

More than three hundred years of antiquity permeates Newtown. Take a self-guided excursion along thirty-four historically noteworthy sites down our main streets on the Newtown Heritage walk.  See firsthand how old meets new in the distinctive gem that is our town.
